How professional tax is calculated
The same idea everywhere, a slab looked up against income, but states do not agree on which income. Getting the base wrong is the most common reason two tools disagree.
Monthly salary
Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat and Assam look up the month's salary in the slab and deduct that month's amount.
Annual salary or income
Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand set the slab on the year's salary. Madhya Pradesh also sets the monthly split. Bihar and Jharkhand set only a yearly amount.
Half-yearly income
Tamil Nadu and Kerala charge per half year through the local body, on the income for that half year.
Income tax test
Punjab's State Development Tax is Rs 200 a month for anyone who pays income tax, and nothing for anyone who does not.
No state can charge more than Rs 2,500 a year. Article 276(2) of the Constitution sets that ceiling for one person. It is why Maharashtra and Karnataka charge Rs 300 in February and Madhya Pradesh charges more in the twelfth month: Rs 200 for twelve months would only reach Rs 2,400. Every band in this calculator is checked against the cap before the page is built.
Deducting it every month without looking it up
A calculator is fine for checking one salary. Running payroll means applying the right slab to every employee every month, and remembering the month that differs. That is a job for payroll software, and it is worth being precise about what it covers.
What Fuzen HRMS Pro does
- Its Payroll Center calculates PF, ESI, TDS and professional tax in the payroll run.
- A State of Operation setting decides which state's professional tax slabs are applied.
- It produces payslip PDFs, the bank salary file, the PF ECR and the ESI file.
What it does not do
- It applies the slabs for one State of Operation. If your people work in several states, state by state professional tax is a custom build.
- It does not file your professional tax return or generate the challan.
Try it on your own payroll
Fuzen HRMS Pro covers employees, attendance, leave and payroll. It is a 14 day free trial with no credit card, then Rs 35,000 one time with hosting billed on usage.

What is professional tax?
Professional tax is a tax that states levy on people who earn a living from a profession, trade, calling or employment. Article 276 of the Constitution allows it and caps it at Rs 2,500 per person per year. For salaried staff the employer deducts it from salary and pays it to the state, which is why it shows up as a separate line on the payslip.
What is the maximum professional tax in a year?
Rs 2,500. Article 276(2) of the Constitution stops any state from charging more than that to one person in a year. It is also why several states charge a larger amount in one month: Rs 200 for eleven months is Rs 2,200, so Maharashtra and Karnataka collect Rs 300 in February to reach Rs 2,500, and Madhya Pradesh does the same in the twelfth month.
Is professional tax the same in every state?
No. Each state sets its own schedule, and they do not even use the same base. Most key the slab on monthly salary. Madhya Pradesh, Bihar and Jharkhand use annual salary or income. Tamil Nadu and Kerala charge per half year on half-yearly income through the local body. Punjab charges a flat Rs 200 a month to anyone who pays income tax. The calculator converts your monthly salary to whichever base your state uses.
Is professional tax still charged in Odisha?
No. Odisha repealed it with effect from 1 April 2026 through the Repeal Ordinance 2026, published in the Odisha Gazette on 21 April 2026. No professional tax is deductible in Odisha for periods from that date, although many calculators and payroll tools still charge it.
Has West Bengal changed its professional tax rates?
Not yet. A new schedule was published in draft on 18 August 2026, with salaried rates proposed from 1 October 2026 and objections invited. As of 11 September 2026 we have not found a final notification, so the calculator uses the schedule in force and shows the draft as a separate option. Do not deduct at the draft rates until they are final.
Why is professional tax Rs 300 in February in Maharashtra?
Because Rs 200 a month for twelve months would be Rs 2,400, and the schedule is written to collect the full Rs 2,500 allowed by the Constitution. So salaries above Rs 10,000 for men and above Rs 25,000 for women pay Rs 200 for eleven months and Rs 300 in February. Karnataka works the same way from 1 April 2025.
How is professional tax worked out in Tamil Nadu and Kerala?
In both states it is levied by the local body, per half year, on half-yearly income. The calculator multiplies your monthly salary by six and applies the half-yearly slab. The Tamil Nadu figures are Greater Chennai Corporation's rates. Other corporations and municipalities in Tamil Nadu set their own, so check with yours.
How do Bihar and Jharkhand deduct professional tax?
Both Acts set an annual amount on annual salary or income and do not prescribe a monthly split. The calculator shows the annual figure and, for budgeting, the same amount spread evenly across twelve months. How you actually deduct it through the year is a payroll choice, not something the Act fixes.
Which states does this calculator cover?
Fourteen: Andhra Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu (Chennai), Telangana and West Bengal, plus the West Bengal draft. Each was checked against a primary government source on 11 September 2026. Some other states, including several in the north east, and Puducherry are not covered yet, because we have not checked their schedules against a primary source.
